Aspartate Transaminase (AST) is an enzyme that resides in several organs (pancreas, heart and more) but is most associated with liver health. Similarly to ALT, AST is released into the bloodstream when liver cells are damaged.
AST’s main function is to catalyze the reactions between aspartate & glutamate. It is therefore a crucial enzyme in amino acid metabolism.
High levels of AST indicate signs of liver injury or disease. Other heart-related or pancreas-related issues can often be caused as a result of elevated AST.
Chronic alcohol/drug consumption, obesity, certain medications and supplements are common causes of elevated AST levels.
