Prolactin is a hormone that is released by the pituitary gland and plays a functional role in female lactation and certain tissue development. 

What Does Prolactin Do?

Prolactin stimulates the development of breast development and lactation in females. 

What Are The Effects of Elevated Prolactin?

In general, levels are elevated in pregnant women and new mothers, while levels are low for nonpregnant women.

If levels are elevated in females, it can indicate prolactinomas. Menstrual problems and infertility can also occur.
