Total Testosterone

As Measured by Testosterone

What is testosterone?

Testosterone is a hormone found in both males and females, as well as in other animals. It is primarily made in the testicles in men and in much smaller amounts in the ovaries in women.

Testosterone production typically begins to increase significantly during puberty, and begins to drop after the age 30.

What does testosterone do?

Testosterone is most commonly associated with sex drive, and is a crucial factor in sperm production. It can also impact bone and muscle mass, fat storage in males, and in some cases red blood cell development. Testosterone can be a determinant of mood and temperament in males. (1)

The Effects of Testosterone Deficiency

Very high or very low levels of testosterone in males can indicate a whole host if issues ranging from poor muscle development, irritability, lowered sex drive, pituitary gland problems and can affect mental health.

Young men with higher levels of testosterone may begin puberty earlier, while women with higher than normal testosterone may develop masculine features.
If your testosterone levels are extremely high, your doctor may recommend other tests to find out the underlying cause.
